Essay Guidelines

Theme: Seerah of Prophet Mohammed(PBHU

21:107

And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds. (Al-Ambia 21:107)

The above verse of Holy Quran defines the persona of Prophet Mohammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).  It primarily emphasizes his character as most merciful and compassionate. His   mercy  extends  to all human beings and is not limited to just Muslims alone. The mission assigned to  prophet (PBHU) was to communicate Allah’s message of oneness  through peace to all humanity.

You are invited to write an essay on the Seerah of prophet Mohammed (May peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), by Dar ul Imaan Institute, to protect his (PBHU) honor in today’s world and to show our love and respect to our beloved prophet Mohammed (PBHU).

Group 1: Ages 9-11

Group 2: Ages 12-15

Group 3: Ages 16 and up

Length of essay for group 1 is 1500, group 2 is 2000 and group 3 is 3000 words.

The essay should cover the topics assigned to its respective age group.

Examples of what you might want to include in you essay are as follows:-

1) Why / How is prophet Mohammed(s) mercy for all?

2) Site examples from seerah which demonstrate his compassion and merciful character.

3) State examples from your own life about how the implementation of prophet Mohammed (s) sunnah effected you to become more compassionate and merciful.

Essay will be judged by a panel of judges who will grade based upon essay length, grammar, spelling, content, topic relevance and creativity.

Contest Rules

Contest Regulations All essays must comply with the following contest rules before submission:

• Essay can be submitted in both English and Urdu language.

No literary form other than an essay will be accepted.

• Each essay must reflect the contestant’s own research, writing and original thinking. Essays must not be in the public domain, must be factually accurate and must not infringe or violate any law or the legal or equitable right of any person or entity, nor contain material that infringes or violates any personal property rights of others or that constitutes defamation, or is otherwise unlawful.

• Contest administrators reserve the right to disqualify any entry for a justified reason.

• Dar ul Imaan reserves the right to switch the gifts with equal value items.

• Indecent or incomplete entries will be disqualified. The Contest Organizers/Sponsors reserve the right to scrutinize all entries for these requirements prior to entry in the Contest.

• The odds of winning depend on the total number of entries received.

• Contest Organizers/Sponsors and their agents are not responsible for entries that are late, stolen, garbled/jumbled, corrupted, misdirected, incomplete or illegible.

Essay submission

• Essays must be typed, double-spaced and in English.

• Essays submitted in Urdu should either be typed or written in neat handwriting double spaced.

• The essay length for group 1 is 1500 words, group 2 is 2000 words and group 3 is 3000 words

• The title of the essay MUST appear on the top of the first page of essay text.

• No reference will be made in the body of the essay that identifies the student’s name or parent/guardian.

• Last day of Essay’s submission is March 30th 2014 no later than 11:59pm (eastern time).

• Essays will not be returned to the author. Once submitted, they become property of Dar-ul-Imaan Institute. By submitting an essay, contestants agree to allow Dar-ul-Imaan Institute to reprint all or parts of the essay in any format.

Essay scoring

• Understanding the topic: (Does the writer demonstrate a clear understanding of the question and his response is clear, detailed and to the point).

• Original thinking related to the topic: To what extent is the original thinking relevant to the subject.

• Effectiveness in presenting a point of view: To what extent does the writer effectively present his/her point of view.

• Literary style, grammar and spelling: To what extend does the writer use proper literary style, grammar and spelling.

• Tie Breaker: Is the essay unique and creative?

Eligibility

  • • Only one (1) essay may be submitted by each contestant
  • • Each contestant must fill out the registration form and pay the fee online, by check or cash.
  • • Each writer will be assigned an Id umber for their entry. (Entries may not be submitted with the author’s name, for the purpose of fairness)

Registration

Registration fee till Feb. 12th, 2014 is $20, ($5 off for early registration)

Registration fee from Feb 13th to March 30th 2014 is $25
